Henrico County was founded as the Henrico Shire in 1634 and is one of the country's oldest counties. The City of Richmond was part of Henrico until 1834 when it branched out to become an independent city, however you can still tell today that the city life of Richmond is still very much a part of Henrico. Today, Henrico is the fifth-most populous county in Virginia, with an estimated population of approximately 330,818 people as of 2020. The county covers an area of around 243 square miles (630 square kilometers) and is known for its diverse communities, historical sites, and vibrant economy.
