Area coal mines were founded in the early 1800s, leading to the establishment of the community of Midlothian. Today, River Downs enjoys one of the best locations of all western Richmond suburban communities with adjacent access to Robious Landing Park and the James River. For more quiet days, Independence Golf Club is a very popular choice. One of the area's best public golf courses has been recognized by several news publications for its efficient playtime, welcoming atmosphere, top-notch dining facilities, and consistent array of events throughout the year.

When temperatures warm up and roadside flowers bloom, locals can look forward to a weekend of food, drinks, and entertainment put on by talented locals. Throughout the year, the expansive Robious Landing Park is heavily enjoyed by residents of all ages. Stretching across 104 acres, the park includes just over three miles of trails, access to the James River, sand volleyball courts, picnic facilities, and playground equipment for kiddos.
