If you live in Powhatan, you already know the county doesn't do a single blockbuster autumn weekend and then coast. What it does instead, from mid-September through late October, is stack six back-to-back Saturdays where a festival, a race, a farm stand, and a live band on the same stretch of Old Buckingham Road all overlap. It is the closest thing Powhatan has to a downtown season, and most of it happens inside a two-mile radius of the Historic Courthouse Village.
The advantage of already being here is that you do not have to pick one weekend. You can plan around the whole run.

Why the Courthouse Village does more work than you think
The Historic Courthouse Village is small enough to feel like a footnote on a map and dense enough that the Festival of the Grape can put 20-plus Virginia wineries, cideries, meaderies, and distillers on the same lawn without spilling into a parking problem. The 2026 edition lands on October 3, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with The KOS Band playing 2 to 6 p.m. and Powhatan Elementary at 4111 Old Buckingham serving as the main coming-from-the-west entrance. Outside food and coolers stay home. Only service dogs. Wine is sold by the bottle for on-site consumption.
The part residents tend to under-use is the day after. First Fridays Powhatan runs at 3825 Marion Harland Lane, Quarterfield Markets hosts a 2nd Saturday Festival, and the Powhatan Farmstand Trail keeps rolling through fall out of 1395 Schroeder Road. If the Festival of the Grape is the county's loudest afternoon, the surrounding four weekends are where the calendar actually earns its keep.
The Saturday-night band question, answered through November
If you have ever asked a neighbor where to eat on a Saturday and gotten "County Seat, and check who's playing," this is why. The restaurant at 3883 Old Buckingham publishes its live-music calendar a full season out, and the fall run is genuinely the strongest stretch of the year:

What Fine Creek is pouring this fall
Fine Creek Brewing Co. sits at 2425 Robert E Lee Road, open Thursday 3 to 8, Friday and Saturday noon to 8, Sunday noon to 6, kitchen closes a quarter till. Two beers on the current board are worth planning a visit around.
The first is a Roggenbier, a rye-forward take on a dark Hefeweizen, brewed as a Pro-Am collaboration with Mike Drago for the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild's new 2026 Pro-Am category. Drago's recipe leans on Hefeweizen yeast for banana and clove notes over a spiced rye backbone. The second is a Virginia Small Beer at 2.8% ABV, brewed for VA250 based on George Washington's 1757 recipe, using sorghum molasses pressed and boiled at Bear Bottom Farm, Virginia hops from Greenmont Hopworks, and Murphy & Rude 6-Row Pale Malt. It drinks like toasted biscuits and freshly pressed cider, and at 2.8% it is the rare fall beer you can order two of before a hike.
The brewery does not allow pets other than service animals. Cottages on the property are rentable for overnights, which is a useful thing to remember when family visits and your guest room is already full.
Three trailheads, one park, and the hike worth planning around
Powhatan State Park has about eight miles of trail, seven of them equestrian-accessible, and 2.5 miles of James River frontage. Three car-top canoe slides sit along that frontage, which matters if you own a kayak but not a trailer. The park's most-loved walk is the Gold Dust Trail, a shaded 0.8-mile moderate loop that ends at the river with the option to continue along the River Trail without doubling back.
The hike worth putting on the calendar is on September 26 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., starting at the Launch A parking lot. It is a ranger-led 2.5-mile loop of the Turkey–River–Gold Dust trails marking the 100th anniversary of Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation. DCR opened its first six parks in 1936. The system now runs 44 of them, and the Powhatan ranger staff is walking residents through what a century of the agency has meant for the land the county actually uses. Close-toed shoes, water, and the standard state-park parking fee. No pre-registration.
If you want equipment, Maiden Voyage Outfitters handles rentals and shuttle service since the park does not run its own. Park hours are dawn to dusk, and the office at 4616 Powhatan State Park Road is open 9 to 4 daily.
The race weekend residents underestimate
The county quietly hosts four fall races, and three of them fall inside the six-weekend stretch. The Powhatan 10 Miler on September 19 includes a 5-mile trail option, which is the entry point for anyone who lives on gravel road and does not usually pin on a bib. Good Medicine 5K follows on September 26, the same morning as the ranger hike, so if the household splits between runners and walkers you can leave one car at the park and one at the start line and reconvene at County Seat by 6 p.m. for East of Hollywood.
October 17 is the deep-end weekend. The Piedmont 8 Hour trail run and 8-hour relay lands on the same day as Dolly's Color Run, giving residents an eight-hour ultra and a novelty 5K on a single Saturday, plus Southern Tides at the Halloween party by dinnertime.
If out-of-town family flies in on a fall Saturday
Assume they land at RIC around lunch. A day that uses the stretch without feeling like a tour:
- Coffee and a pastry at Mabel's Espresso Bakery Cafe on the drive west.
- The Gold Dust loop at Powhatan State Park, roughly an hour with photos.
- Lunch at Maxey's Store or 1933 Public House, both frequently named among the county's best.
- An afternoon flight of the VA250 Small Beer at Fine Creek, with the Roggenbier as a second pour if anyone's curious about the Pro-Am story.
- Dinner and a band at County Seat, seven minutes east.
- Optional nightcap or a walk through the Courthouse Village so they can see the venue that had 5,000-plus people the weekend before at the Festival of the Grape.

Why any of this matters if you are thinking a year ahead
