Most Henrico calendars treat August as a single blur. It isn't. The county quietly programs late summer along two parallel tracks that almost never touch, then lets them collide on one Thursday night before September pulls everyone back to school pickup and soccer. If you live here already, the trick is seeing the shape of that week before it arrives.
The rest of the month is a slower story about which corridors just added something worth driving to and which ones are still waiting on a ribbon-cutting. Both stories matter for the same reason: what's within a fifteen-minute drive of your house has changed more in the last ninety days than most residents realize.
On Thursday, August 27, a national headliner package and a free community band concert are happening within seven miles of each other, starting an hour apart. You can't do both. That's the pivot.
The Thursday That Splits The Week
At the Innsbrook Pavilion in Glen Allen, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms bring their co-headlining tour to the venue on Aug. 27, joined by special guests Spin Doctors. It sits inside a heavier-than-usual August run: 38 Special takes the stage Friday, June 26, and pop-rock trio Hanson on Saturday, Aug. 8, with country duo Brothers Osborne performing on Friday, Aug. 21. The pattern this year isn't a couple of marquee dates propping up a thin season. The 2026 season, which began Thursday, May 28 with Gary Allan, will run into the fall and showcase more than 17 nationally touring artists and six tribute acts.
Seven miles east, at Walkerton Tavern on Mountain Road in Glen Allen, the Henrico Community Band closes its own summer at 7 p.m. that same Thursday. Performed by the Henrico Community Band under the direction of Archer Johnson, the series is a lawn-chair-and-blanket setup on the tavern grounds, with 2026 dates of June 25, July 30 and August 27. It's free. The Innsbrook ticket is not.

The two events sit on opposite ends of the same experience. One is the last big paid night of a season that will keep going through October. The other is the last note of a small three-concert series that only exists in June, July, and August. If you have out-of-town family arriving that weekend, the calendar has already made the choice easier than it looks.
What's Actually New To Try This Month
Late-summer restaurant news in Henrico tends to be quieter than the spring wave, but the pipeline is unusually loaded this year across three different corridors. The ones worth putting on your list:
- Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, Short Pump. Kura, the largest revolving sushi restaurant chain in the US, plans to open in the Short Pump Station shopping center. It fills a category Short Pump has been missing at scale, and it will change the calculus of a Broad Street dinner-and-a-movie plan.
- Holy Burger, Brook Road. This NYC-based burger chain is opening its first Henrico location, reimagining a former Wendy's building on Brook Road. Worth watching if you're on the Northside and tired of the same three burger options.
- Culver's, S. Laburnum Ave. The chain has picked Henrico for its first Virginia location. Property records show S&L Properties Richmond LLC purchased a retail building at 4306 S. Laburnum Ave. for $1,575,000 near the Richmond International Airport, and plans to demolish the existing building on the site to construct the Culver's restaurant. That's a full teardown, so don't expect a soft opening in August. It's a spring 2027 conversation.
- Sound Hall Studios, N. Parham Road. Not a restaurant, but arguably the most interesting addition of the summer. Sound Hall Studios, a first-of-its-kind community music hub designed to serve musicians of all ages and skill levels, opened June 29 at 2821 North Parham Road, Suite 204, across from Tucker High School. If you have a teenager who's been asking for lessons or a garage-band adult friend, it's the first thing that's opened in the West End specifically for that.
Two of these four are already open. Two are still in build-out. Knowing which is which saves a wasted trip.
A Saturday That Uses The Corridor
If Aug 27 is the pivot, Aug 22 is the weekend to actually walk the neighborhood. A Saturday plan that leans into what's already operating, rather than what's coming:
- Start at the Lakeside Farmers' Market on Lakeside Ave. before 10 a.m., when the parking is still reasonable.
- Drive west to Sound Hall Studios on N. Parham to see the space if you've been curious. It's near Tucker, easy to fold in.
- Lunch in Short Pump, ideally somewhere you haven't tried recently. If Kura hasn't opened yet, walk Short Pump Station and note the storefront so you can plan a return.
- Innsbrook Pavilion for the Brothers Osborne show that evening. Gates at 5:30, show at 7, rain or shine.
The point is that a resident's Saturday in the West End doesn't need a special event to fill it right now. The programming is already there. Sequencing it is the actual skill.
The Quiet September Handoff
The month doesn't end at Blues Traveler. It hands off. The Henrico Master Gardeners move their plant clinic rotation to Dorey Park at 2999 Darbytown Rd. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 5, 12, 19 and 26, four Saturdays in a row. That's the largest single concentration of free horticultural help you'll find in the county all year, and Dorey is closer to Varina and eastern Henrico residents than most people realize.
Before then, there's a Tuesday afternoon worth marking. Gayton Library at 10600 Gayton Rd will host a Pollinators talk on August 26 at 2 p.m. It sits the day before the Aug 27 collision, which means the last week of August in Henrico effectively has three programmed nights in a row across three very different formats. That's not typical. It's usually one or two.
The Innsbrook season itself keeps rolling into fall with Friday and Saturday shows on Sept 4, 11, and 18, so if August feels overbooked, the same venue is still there in September with lower humidity and shorter lines at the gate.
Why Any Of This Matters If You Live Here
Henrico has a habit of being described from the outside as a shopping-and-schools county, which flattens what's actually happening on the ground. The reality is that a free lawn-chair concert at Walkerton Tavern under Archer Johnson and a national touring act at Innsbrook exist inside the same zip codes, on the same night, and belong to the same residents. Most people never attend both in the same summer. The ones who do tend to be the ones who've figured out that this county programs itself in layers, not headlines.
The restaurant pipeline reinforces the same idea. Brook Road, Short Pump Station, and South Laburnum are all getting first-to-market or first-in-Virginia concepts within the same twelve-month window. That's not the profile of a market coasting on Short Pump Town Center. It's the profile of a market that operators are betting on across three very different demographics and drive times.
